terribly hung over from a night out with a wily bunch of Brits at Cosmo’s which was bloody fantastic. Steve is cancerous but dealing well with the chemotherapy and the general stress of having cancer. He’s the one who picked me up when I was trying to hitch a ride outside of Kapariana. In fact, a lot of people here have cancer or used to, including Francesca, who is a kind woman and a fox. She and her husband Roger, a goofy and lively old man, are former dive instructors who worked in Egypt, diving the Red Sea. Then there is Vince, who doesn’t have cancer, but is an atheist and used to be in the center of the nightlife of London years ago. He knows the Rolling Stones personally and some other band that I’ve never heard of. He is also the one who kept giving me martinis, which were excellent. The advantage to being a gregarious traveler is that you get a lot of stuff for free. The martinis do start to taste like water later on though and as I have learned this can be dangerous. Amidst our Dionysian festivities, I observed that Agia Galini is an excellent place in which to have cancer. The Brits agreed.
Today I bought EIGHT BOOKS at the cat bazaar (to benefit the stray cats of the village) so I’ve got plenty of reading to do. The one I’m reading now it Papillon if you’ve ever heard the story. I also bought Seven Years in Tibet which was extremely strange, because as I walked on the beach this morning I spent a good deal of time thinking about the movie adaptation and about the Dalai Lama. In addition I picked up an Aldous Huxley book, Brave New World, also strange because I’ve thought about him some recently, and Snow Falling on Cedars, which is also strange because I was trying to remember the name of the lead actor in that movie who is also in Gattaca. It’s Ethan Hawke. I couldn’t remember the name of the other movie he was in besides Gattaca, which was Snow Falling on Cedars. I also bought an old magazine, The Tall Ships Return to Mersey, about a sailing race from Boston to Liverpool. I ate two bacon sandwiches and a sausage sandwich with Houses of Parliament Sauce (it’s approved by the Queen of England) and onions. Delicious!
